John Ensminger Stauffer

John E. Stauffer, son of Christian Stauffer, was born November 27, 1819 in Jonestown, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. He was named after his mother Christiana Ensminger. In 1833 he moved with his family, by wagon, to Stark County Ohio. On August 14, 1842 he married Sarah Rebecca Haight. Sometime afterwards they moved to Indiana. The Federal Census of 1860 shows John and Rebecca living in Baugo Township, Elkhart Indiana with 8 of their 12 children. Shortly after the Civil War the family moved again, this time to Pine Creek Township, Ogle County Illinois. John purchased 80 acres off the Lowell Park road. He farmed the land until he retired in 1880, and moved to Polo Illinois. He rented his farm to his son Daniel who later purchased the land upon his father’s death. The Federal Census of 1900 shows John and Rebecca living in Buffalo Township, Ogle County Illinois in the town of Polo. He was 80 years old and Rebecca was 75. Their youngest daughter Annie, 25 lived with them. John and Rebecca lived in Polo, Illinois until their death. They are both buried in the Fairmount cemetery in Polo north of town on IL Route 26.

To John E. and Rebecca Stauffer twelve children were born: Peter Stauffer February 18, 1844, John Wesley Stauffer January 24, 1846, Sarah E. Stauffer Nicodemus April 14, 1857, George W. Stauffer February 27, 1849, Christina Stauffer Solenberger January 2, 1851, Daniel Stauffer February 4, 1853, Mary Ellen Stauffer Miller April 8, 1855, Annanias Stauffer March 1, 1857, William Charles Stauffer October 7, 1859, Rebecca Jane Stauffer McDowell July 12, 1863, Priscilla Ella Stauffer June 11, 1865, and Annie May Stauffer Johnson April 22, 1871.
